Choose a Familiar Clue
Start with a clue you recognize. A crossword does not require you to begin at 1-Across, and skipping an unfamiliar name is part of solving. Select a square in the entry you want to fill, then check that the highlighted clue is the one you mean to answer. A square can belong to both an Across answer and a Down answer, so pay attention to direction before typing.
Check the Answer Length
The number of squares gives you a useful constraint. An answer that is right in meaning but too long will not fit that entry. For names and phrases, the grid usually leaves out spaces and punctuation. Follow the puzzle's instructions if it uses an unusual convention. When two plausible answers have the same length, use their crossing letters to decide between them.
Work Outward
Work outward from an answer you feel confident about. Each letter can give you a foothold in another clue. If you reach a difficult corner, try a different part of the grid instead of repeatedly guessing at the same entry. Returning with fresh crossing letters often makes a clue clearer.
Use the Available Help
The player's assistance menu provides checking or revealing options when enabled. “Check grid” is the control to look for when you want to test entered letters. A reveal gives away part of the solution, so choose it when you would rather move forward than keep searching. Neither choice makes the puzzle less yours. Use the level of help that makes the experience enjoyable.
Troubleshoot the Controls
If typing seems to go in the wrong direction, select the intended clue again. If an entry will not accept text, check that the grid has focus by selecting a playable square. For a persistent issue, report the puzzle title, device, browser and the step that failed. Avoid sending a screenshot containing your email address or other personal information.
After Your Solve
When you finish, revisit a clue that taught you something. Understanding why an answer fits can be more satisfying than simply filling the last square.
